Doctoral Candidates of the International Doctoral School Recognized in the Young Talents Competition

We are pleased to announce that Dr Maja Nowicka has become a laureate of the 8th edition of the international Young Talents in Internal Medicine World Contest, organized by the Polish Institute for Evidence Based Medicine (PIEBM) and McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada). The awarded abstract is titled “Fulminant liver failure following marathon run.”

Dr Maja Nowicka is a doctoral candidate at the International Doctoral School, affiliated with the Department of Internal Medicine and Transplant Nephrology, and a resident specializing in nephrology at the Norbert Barlicki University Clinical Hospital in Łódź. She is the founder and supervisor of the Student Scientific Club of Transplant Nephrology and the author or co-author of numerous scientific publications (h-index 5, total IF above 31). In 2024, she received the

ERA EDTA grant for Poland. Her scientific interests include glomerular diseases, nephrotic syndrome, and the care of patients after kidney transplantation.

We are also pleased to announce that Dr Wiktoria Ryżewska was awarded 2nd place in the Hematology category for her abstract titled “The wrong place, the right diagnosis: Multiple myeloma diagnosed from pleural effusion.” Dr Wiktoria Ryżewska is a doctoral candidate at the International Doctoral School in the Department of Hemostasis Disorders and a resident at the Department of General Hematology at the M. Kopernik Regional Specialist Centre for Oncology and Traumatology in Łódź. She is the author of numerous scientific publications in the field of hematology, with particular focus on hemostasis disorders.

The Young Talents Competition has been an integral part of the MIRCIM – McMaster International Review Course in Internal Medicine for eight years. The 2026 edition of the conference took place on 7–9 May in Kraków, with the Medical University of Łódź serving as a partner. This year, 147 abstracts from 32 countries were accepted for the competition.

We warmly congratulate both doctoral candidates on their outstanding achievements, which are a source of pride for the entire community of the Medical University of Łódź.
