The scope of doctoral dissertations carried out in the discipline of Medical Sciences includes multidisciplinary issues related to medicine and dentistry, including molecular abnormalities underlying various diseases, with their prognostic and predictive value and potential therapeutic significance for so-called targeted therapies, as well as metabolic processes in normal and abnormal cells and tissues. The doctoral dissertations also concern preclinical studies assessing the effects of new medicinal substances on cells (in vitro) and animal organisms (in vivo) in order to determine the safety and effectiveness of a potential drug before it is used for the first time in humans. Moreover, mechanical and biological properties of materials applied in dentistry and orthopaedics are investigated In addition, research is carried out in the field of broadly understood medical biostatistics (using the latest information technologies) as well as in anatomy, biology, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
During education at the International Doctoral School, students systematically improve their medical knowledge and acquire teaching skills as academic teachers. The International Doctoral School graduates in the discipline of Medical Science acquire advanced theoretical and practical knowledge regarding planning and conducting scientific research, including experimental works, they are able to formulate hypotheses, analyze research results and draw proper conclusions. They know basic research techniques (including molecular biology techniques, flow cytometry etc.) and are able to skillfully apply them in practice. They are skilled at using scientific literature, statistical evaluationof study results, preparation of scientific publications and cooperation in research groups implementing scientific projects.
