Immediate response and remarks after the Public Scientific Review Session in IDS MUL 9-10 of June 2021

Dear PhD Students,

As the Director of IDS-MUL, I would like to express my appreciation for your great efforts and valuable work during the last year; they were really very special, not only for our University community, but also for Medicine, and the world. The pandemic was an exceptional time for researchers, and we understand that the considerable pressure generated by the need to confront COVID-19 often pushed scientific work into second place.

We are very grateful for the time and effort you took to share your experience with other PhD students. I hope that during this Public Scientific Review Session you had the opportunity to be familiarised with the main directions of the scientific work at our University, and to realise your individual  aspirations and personal development. It was a chance to meet each other, albeit only online this year, and most importantly, it was a valuable opportunity to practice your academic skills and behaviour during conferences and presentations.

With this in mind, you may find the following points useful for improving your presentations.

  • Try and solve all technical problems before your presentation (we sent you two invitation emails and asked you to check the process of uploading the presentation with our office staff before the event)
  • Do not start your presentation by introducing yourself – the chairman has already done it for you
  • Create an easy-to-follow structure: please don’t squeeze too many words on a slide!
  • Do not read off the slides during the presentation
  • At the end of your presentation, use a pause before presenting your key achievements. The silence will emphasize what you said and make it meaningful.
  • Never, ever, prolong your presentation beyond the time limit!

We would like to wish you a wonderful holiday, and the best of luck in your future projects!
